Lafayette Church

This creepy old church is a Friday the 13th special. It is at the corner of Route 15 and Route 94 in Lafayette Township, New Jersey.

Queen of Peace Retreat House

Boy am I a sucker for creepy old buildings. This one jumped out at me as I drove up Route 206 near Newton, New Jersey. Apparently it was a retreat house run by Benedictine monks from St. Paul’s Abbey. Now it’s just a creepy old building, more so on a gloomy fall day.

Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum

This is the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum in Weston, West Virginia. Even the name sends chills up my spine. Originally opened in 1864, it was built to house 240 patients. At it’s peak in the 1950s, it held around 2500 in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions. It is purportedly the 2nd largest hand-cut masonry structure in the world next to the Kremlin. Closed only in 1994, it is now open for tours (I will be back for one!), and even overnight tours! Yikes! I will see the inside of this building.

Snow Covered Bridge

This is Emily’s Bridge outside of Stowe, Vermont. I really love covered bridges, especially as the seasons change. One of my favorites was also in Vermont back when the fall colors were peaking (see it here). This bridge is said to be haunted by the ghost of a girl named Emily who died on or near the bridge.

Sloss Furnace

Sloss Furnace in Birmingham, Alabama was a major producer of pig iron from 1882 to 1971. Now it is a National Historic Landmark and open for tours. I got there early in the morning and had it all to myself. It made for some pretty cool industrial landscape shots. This one was my favorite.

Lakeview Hotel

The Lakeview Hotel was looking pretty creepy in the afternoon fog when I was there. I think it’s probably different on a sunny day on the lake. This is in downtown Wawa, Ontario.
